There is a huge range of occupations within the hospitality and catering industry, with job roles spanning a variety of different work places. Hospitality is a fast-paced industry to work in, with a requirement to constantly meet the demanding needs of customers. Work settings could include: restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation, cafes, pubs and contract caterers including schools, hospitals and large businesses where canteens are present. 

Who are these qualifications for?

The Level 2 qualification is for those who are new to working in hospitality and catering, with no or very little skills and experience. Level 3 is aimed at those who can are looking to develop their skills further, whilst taking on supervision and leadership responsibilities.

What are the entry requirements?

In order to start a hospitality and catering qualification, candidates must have a work placement. The candidate must be paid the Apprenticeship Wage as a minimum but many employers pay a bit more. The position should ideally be for at least 30 hours per week.  If you are already employed, working requirements can be negotiated depending on existing experience. 

Personal qualities required to work in this sector

Due to the vast range of career opportunities within this industry personal qualities vary from role to role. Excellent customer service skills and good presentation are essential for those working in customer facing roles such as waitressing and other front of house positions. For chefs and kitchen staff, methodical and logical working is required along with creativity and an innovative attitude in order to continually offer new things to customers. Across all occupations good time management, communication and team working skills are essential for everyone in order to keep establishments running smoothly and to keep customers satisfied.

How long will it take to complete?

The Level 2 qualification will take between 12 to 15 months to complete. At Level 3, candidates can expect to complete in 12 to 18 months. Completion times may vary and are dependent on a range of factors including candidate ability, previous experience and working hours. 

How will the qualifications be achieved?

Qualifications are largely work-based. Candidates will have an assessor who will visit them at work on a regular basis to document progress through observations, discussions and witness testimonies from managers. Depending on your current circumstances some individuals will just work towards the vocational qualification, whilst others may work towards an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer candidates a full package of qualifications known as a framework. In addition to the diploma, all candidates are required to work towards maths, English and IT qualifications, whilst learning about employment rights and responsibilities, and building on personal learning and thinking skills.

Apprenticeship Framework

Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality (depending on chosen pathway) 
  • Level 2 Technical Certificate in Principles of Hospitality & Catering
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in professional Cookery/Hospitality
  • Level 3 Technical Certificate in Principles of Hospitality & Catering
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
